I’ve always preferred the title “Lash Artist” over “Lash Tech” mostly because what we do truly is a form of art. Lashing requires creativity and forward-thinking much like the mindset of an artist. An experienced lash artist knows that there’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to lashing. Even though there are technical elements that never change, but every at of lashes you do requires a certain degree of creativity.
Every client, eye shape, and lash line are completely different. You won’t be successful as a lash artist if you try to build a career turning cookie-cutter sets. If you really want to make it in the industry, you have to go above and beyond the basics. Here are a few ways to spark creativity in your lash sets…
Listen & Learn
Sometimes, clients think they know what they want. Whether it’s a picture from Pinterest or a description of what their friend has, most of the time, it’s not for them. Take the time to get to know your client.
What look are they really going for?
Are they active?
Do they wear makeup?
These types of questions can help you make suggestions for a set they’ll love that actually works for them!
Learning also applies to YOU as a lash artist! Even as an experienced lash artist, I’m learning all of the time. My days as a trainer started years ago with the Lash Affair team. We were one of the first teams to jumpstart the Lash Affair training programs. At this time I was new, still learning, unsure about my skill set, and coming into true professionalism. I learned so much with this group of ladies, about training and the industry, that I was able to build a solid foundation for success.
Find ways to stand out from the crowd! Don’t just post photos of your work and expect people to flood through the doors of your lash studio. Try cross-marketing with another beauty industry colleague. Do live videos, be active on social media, run an advertisement…It’s important to find ways to stand out from the crowd especially when you are starting out.
In all of your marketing, don’t forget to educate your potential clients. Start by identifying your target market and nurture them. Help them understand their lash extensions options, the lashing process, and the commitment! Become an authority in your area to help you stand out from the crowd.
Advance Your Training
A creative lash artist never stops learning. There’s always going to be a new trend or a better way to do things- don’t miss out! If you really want to stay on top of your game, then you need to continue your education.
So many times, people start lashing and training without being trained multiple times. When you are shopping around for a trainer, ask them how many times they have been certified and WHO they have been certified with! Look at their mentor’s portfolio and decide if they have enough knowledge to take you to the next level.
If you’re ready to level up your lash game, join our upcoming training on September 26 in Charlotte. If you have already been certified and would like to learn some advanced skills, sign up for one of our mentoring sessions.
