3 Career Paths for Aspiring Lash Artists

One of our goals at Industry Lash Pro is not only to educate aspiring lash artists, but to also surround you with a network of support and advice. It’s no wonder so that many licensed cosmetologists and estheticians are now adding “lash artist” to their resume. The potential six-figure income, flexible hours and ability to be your own boss are all amazing benefits of the job. But, before you start, it’s important to map out your career path. Here are three great paths for licensed lash artists.
  1. Part Time: A part-time lash artist can work on lashes while pursuing another passion. It’s a great way to “keep your foot in the door” so to speak. We recommend doing at least five sets of lashes per week even if you are part-time. Beautiful lashing is a skill that comes with practice- a lot of practice. One of the downsides of only being a part time lash artist is that you won’t perfect your craft as quickly as someone who does lashes full time.
  2. Contracted: A contracted lash artist is someone who works under contract with a salon, spa or other artist. Contracts can be great for those who are just starting out! You might pick up some clients who come through the door of the salon just be your location alone. If you go the contract route, be clear on the terms. What hours can you keep? Do you have a commission split? These are all questions to ask before you sign off. On the plus side, you won’t have to worry too much about the business side of things leaving you more time to practice lashing techniques.
  3. Independent: An independent lash artist is what we call an official #lashboss. Independent artists start their own brand or company and usually work as a full time lash artist. These ladies are usually the entrepreneur types that are likely to make six figures because they are lashing full time without commission splits. One down side of being an independent lash artist is that it’s more than a full time job! On top of lashing, many independent artists are running their business, doing inventory, booking appointments and handling marketing all in a days work.
