Beauty breakdown; the icons of the industry

Jul 1, 2015

June 1st marked what would have been the 89th birthday of the late Marilyn Monroe. She was a woman of many talents and now, almost 53 years after her passing, she still remains one of the most iconic beauties of the 20th century. In celebration of Marilyn’s birthday, we’re taking a look at some of the women who built the beauty industry that we know and love today.

Brigitte Bardot This French actress, model and singer was another sex symbol of the 1950s. The Parisian beauty was known for her bedroom eyes defined by dark liner and long lashes. She often paired her bold eyes with neutral cheeks and soft, nude lips. Her cat-eye look is still one that’s in style today!

Edie Sedgwick  Edie brought new life to the 1960s beauty scene with her bold brows, striking makeup and spiky hair. She was anything but ordinary and inspired others with her wild and adventurous style. Edie was one of the first women to rock a pixie cut. We also have her to thank for showing women that good eyebrows are the staple to any look.

Billie Holiday This American Jazz singer and songwriter had a voice that could move mountains. Her angelic vocal style paved the way for female vocalists today. Though she was a pioneer in the music industry with her captivating voice, her natural, flawless look also had an impact on the beauty scene. She was one of the first women to show the value of a good accessory as she was often seen sporting a bold floral piece in her hair. She was a natural beauty with a simple makeup routine consisting of glossy lips and long lashes. She was a working woman and liked to keep the attention on her voice. Go Billie!

The list of early beauty icons goes on to include women like Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor and many, many more. Not only did these women create the beauty industry that we know and love today, but they inspired us to feel beautiful by defining our own look whether it be bold or natural… for that, we thank them!
