Why We Say No to Mixing Mascara and Extensions

Oct 26, 2017

In a CoverGirl survey, over 50 percent of women said they would choose mascara if they could only use one makeup product. We’re thinking that most of these women haven’t tried lash extensions. Regardless, what the survey also tells us is that woman care a lot about their lashes and rightfully so! Don’t get us wrong, we think mascara is great- just not when applied to lash extensions. Trust us when we say mascara and lashes don’t mix. Here’s a few reasons why…

We know mascara creates the appearance of long, voluminous lashes but it also carries bacteria and oils. Mascara can actually do harm to your natural lashes when it’s not properly removed so imagine what it can do to your lash extensions! You can prevent poor retention and fallout from your flutter by saying NO to mascara.

Safety reasons aside, one of the most important reasons to avoid mascara with extensions is because of oil. Have you noticed that many brands of mascara are oil based? Just in case your lash artist failed to mention this to you, oil is a big no-no for your extensions. Oil dissolves the bonding agent and shortens the life of your lashes. This can cause lashes to fall out earlier than normal which we call poor retention. Even if you choose a water-based mascara, the formula can leave your extensions crusty and dried out.

Another huge problem with mixing mascara and lash extensions is that most people do not remove their mascara properly. Taking a swipe of make-up remover (yes, even oil free) to your lash extensions can cause premature lash fall out. Improper cleaning can lead to the build up of pollens, dust, oils and leftover makeup. Not only is build up gross, but it’s downright dangerous to your eyes causing irritation, itching, and infection. Not worth it.

If you read all of this and still plan to wear mascara because you love the dramatic look, hear us out. No two lash plans are the same and you can customize your extensions to your liking. At iLash Charlotte we offer a volume set and you can choose exactly how dramatic you want it to be. We promise, you’ll swear off mascara just like that.
