Proper Lash Placement: Volume Edition

by | May 10, 2018 | Lash Education, Students | 0 comments

Volume lash extensions are often associated with dramatic fluff and va-va volume but that doesn’t always have to be the case! In fact, volume lashes can also produce some natural sets that make them a great choice for a variety of clients. The difference is in the fans- how narrow, how wide, how many and where?! Here’s a few tips…

Start by choosing the right lashes. For example, .10mm is great for a 2d set where as .07 or .05 can go up to that 4D+ range. Remember, the lighter the lashes the fluffier the results! With that being said, go with those .05s if you are going for mega volume.

Next, it’s important to think about what’s going on between your perfectly crafted fans. This is where we talk about wide vs. narrow fans. Wide fans will give you that fluffy look where as narrow fans are more dense and uniform. Tip: make your vans look like a V and NOT a Y. As you might have guessed, a Y-shaped volume fan puts too much weight on the base which can cause poor retention, natural lash damage and a variety of other complications.

Most importantly, it’s all about mapping! This is what we mean by proper placement. Even as an experienced lash artist, I continue to advance my skills in both creating custom fans and determining proper placement which is different for each client. Lash mapping is a great way to layout your set before you start lashing. A lash map will help you determine proper placement for your volume fans so you can achieve your desired look. Think about where you’ll put your narrow vs. wide fans and don’t forget about planning your inner and outer corners.
