Dear Past Self: Here’s What I Wish You Knew

They say you shouldn’t look back because you’re not going that way. Part of me agrees with that logic. But what if we could look back with positivity and reflection? 

How do we get better…stronger- if we can’t grow through what we go through?

As I sit here to type this post, I think back to my first days as a lash artist many years ago. I remember all the feelings, the nervousness, the excitement, the FIRE! If you know me, then you know this is true. 

But the truth is, there’s so much I wish I would have known then about business, lashes, and life! So, for what it’s worth, here’s my open letter to my past self. I hope it can motivate you to keep going forward in positivity to matter what you’re going through now. 

Be kind to yourself

There were times that I didn’t feel confident in this industry. I would compare myself to others in the industry and have negative thoughts about where I was in my journey. I finally realized that my journey was right on time, even though there were moments I wanted more, felt my work wasn’t up to standard, and thought to myself, why would anyone choose me?

My clients have honestly given me the most support and uplifting energy I have ever experienced. Let my clients tell it, I have always been a good lasher, even though I know my work could have been better years ago. My clients speak so much positivity into my life and I am so blessed to be around so many inspiring women. It wasn’t until I started to live in the moment every day with these amazing women that I started to look at my career in a positive light.

Understand loyalty

On my journey, I have worked in a couple of different locations. When working in someone else’s business you must realize that your vision may not always be in line with their vision for their business. What has helped me, is to stick to my business plan. Sounds selfish, but if you don’t stick to your plan you won’t meet your goals. If you have to part ways, treat every separation professionally, don’t burn a bridge and try to maintain relationships.

In business, everyone looks out for the best interest of their business. Don’t take this personally. When you work day to day with someone, relationships form. Your business relationships are exactly that, business relationships, not friendships. This is ok.

You always won’t move forward

Setbacks are a part of the game so accept them, learn the lesson, and move forward.

Every negative situation I have encountered in this industry has helped to strengthen areas that I needed to improve on. For example, I recently had to deal with a difficult client. She had her mind made up that she was unhappy with her service. For every complaint, I had a reason for why she shouldn’t be complaining. I was set on giving her my expert advise when in reality all she wanted from me was to listen and be compassionate.

I had to ask myself, what could I have done differently? Now that I know, next time I experience an unsatisfied customer, I will approach the situation differently. When you’re an entrepreneur you have to continuously figure out how you can grow and be better and not focus on what other people should be doing. That’s their journey! Focus on yours!
