As Spring draws near, the long days of sunshine and warmer temps are right around the corner! Unfortunately, as nature starts to bloom, millions of people to begin their annual ritual of coughing and sneezing. During a season full of environmental irritants and allergies, how can you tell if your client is experiencing a minor seasonal irritation or more serious allergic reaction caused by her lash extensions?
An allergic reaction, most likely caused by the adhesive, can cause symptoms such as red eyes, itching/brining, and even congestion. These symptoms are also common for someone suffering from a seasonal allergy so it’s sometimes hard to determine the cause. Here are some steps you can take as a lash artist to help your client determine the cause:
- Review their history. How long has this client been receiving lash extensions? If a regular client suddenly starts showing symptoms, it is more likely due to an environmental allergy such as pollen or mold. However, be mindful of a possible bell curve when it comes to experiencing an allergy. Sometimes clients who have been receiving eyelash extensions for years can suddenly develop irritations and sensitives.
- Note any changes in their lash routine. Have you recently switched adhesives or tried another new brand of tape? Think about any recent changes you might have made with your products to help determine the cause. If so, you will need to completely remove the allergen for the symptoms to subside. - Work in a well ventilated area. This helps both you and your client minimize exposure to fumes that can cause irritations.
It’s also very important to remind your clients to clean their lashes daily for better retention and help in removing any possible allergens, such as pollen and dust, that can build up on their extensions just as it does in hair. Most importantly, if the symptoms continue to get worse or don’t subside, suggest that they seek medical advice for a proper diagnosis.
