To people outside of the industry, there’s often a lot of confusion when it comes to the difference between a cosmetologist and an esthetician. Both are professions in the beauty industry and both careers have the same goal in mind…to make clients look and feel great! So, when it comes to scoping out an eyelash professional, should you look for an esthetician or a cosmetologist? Does the title matter when it comes to lashes?
The short answer is no, it doesn’t necessarily matter which specific license a lash professional holds. In most states, a qualified lash professional can hold a cosmetology or esthetics license. With that being said, holding a proper license is also essential to the safety and quality of your lashes. When it comes to lashes, there’s not a whole lot of regulation as to who can lash and who can’t. Just because a person offers the service doesn’t mean they are qualified and the laws vary from state to state so be sure to do your research.
In North Carolina, a qualified lash professional MUST hold a cosmetology or esthetics license. That’s the law. Period. But, holding the proper license doesn’t automatically make you a lash pro. When conducting your research, look beyond their title as a cosmetologist or esthetician. Take a look at their training, certification and reviews. Does this lash artist offer other services or does she devote her entire profession to lashes? How many advanced training has she had? How long has she been lashing? What does her portfolio look like? Instagram?
