If you think about it, a lot of good things come from heat and oil in the beauty industry.
We wouldn’t have curling irons, flat irons, or hair dryers without heat…or essential oils, coconut oil, or cuticle oil without oils! In fact, it’s safe to say that heat and oil are major contributors to a lot of wonderful treatments and services we’ve grown to love- but, lash extensions aren’t one of them!
Enemy One: Heat
When we talk about heat and your lash extensions, we mean high heat. The heat from a nice summer day won’t damage your lashes but the high hot from a BBQ grill can take your lashes down! Stay away from things like boiling posts of water. Also, when using a blow dryer, try not to point the high heat directly at your lashes. High heat is probably obvious, but don’t forget about steam!! It’s a big retention killer because it also breaks down adhesive. We always advise clients to crack the door or shower curtain when showering.
Enemy Two: Oil
Oil in common makeup and beauty products seems harmless, but it can breakdown components of your lash adhesive. At iLash Charlotte, we educate our clients to use oil-free makeup and beauty products for the best retention. We also tell our clients to NEVER use mascara. If you need to add some more fluff and definition to your lash line, try volume lashes. A lot of people don’t know that sweat contains oil and water. So heavily active clients, hot yoga goers and saunas produce sweat and that sweat can break down the adhesive.
We recommend rinsing off your lashes right after to help with retention issues.
Staying away from high heat and oil are just some of the essential in proper lash aftercare. Though lash extensions are fairly low maintenance, you’ll want to make sure you understand the ins and outs of aftercare to maximize your lash retention.
