Pre-Made vs. Handmade Volume Fans

For all of my Volume lash artists out there, you probably know the difference between using pre-made vs. handmade volume vans. Obviously, pre-made volume fans are made prior to distribution and come ready to apply. Alternatively, handmade volume fans are, as they sound, created by hand and carefully crafted by the lash artist. So, is it really worth it to spend the time making your own fans? Does it matter?

In my opinion, it does matter- a lot! Even though pre-made volume fans might be more convenient, the difference shows in the results. For starters, pre-made fans imply a “one size fits all” which we know isn’t true when it comes to lashes. You’ll need to adjust your volume fans based on your client’s natural lashes which is something you can’t do with pre-made fans.

Using a pre-made fan on the wrong client could cause damage and discomfort. This is one of the reasons why it’s better to customize your fans just as you should customize your lash sets. Remember, pre-made fans come with adhesive already applied to secure the fan. Using one would require you to dip the fan into more adhesive to apply to your clients lash line. Why use all of that adhesive?

Also, pre-made fans are placed on the natural lash similarly to classic lashes because they are pre-made. In my experience, the retention with pre-made fans does not hold up as well. This is likely because they just sit on top of the natural lash and do not “wrap” around the natural lash like handmade fans do.

When you create your own fans, you can use a curl and style that works with a client’s natural lash for better results. At iLashCharlotte, we take pride in developing uniquely customized sets for each client. This includes volume fans. After all, it’s part of our creative work as lash artists and just another reminder that lash extensions, even volume fans, are not ‘one size fits all.’
